The Story
Kiyomizu-dera (Pure Water Temple) is one of Kyoto's most celebrated landmarks, but the real experience extends far beyond the temple itself. The walk up through Higashiyama's traditional streets is a journey back in time.
The main hall's famous wooden stage extends 13 meters over the hillside, supported by 139 pillars without a single nail. From here, you get panoramic views of Kyoto that change with every season — cherry blossoms in spring, lush green in summer, fiery maple leaves in autumn.
Beneath the main hall, Otowa Waterfall has three streams of water thought to grant different wishes: longevity, success in love, and success in studies. Choose one (all three is considered greedy!).
The approach streets — Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka — are lined with traditional shops, tea houses, and craft stores. These narrow lanes are most atmospheric in the early morning before the shops fully open.
