祇園夜散歩

Experience & Activities

Kyoto's famous geisha district transforms after dark. Wooden machiya townhouses, lantern-lit streets, and if you're lucky, a glimpse of a geiko.

The Story

Gion at twilight is Kyoto at its most cinematic. As the sun sets, the traditional wooden machiya townhouses begin to glow with warm light, and the narrow streets take on a dreamlike quality. This is the heart of Kyoto's geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) culture. While you might spot them hurrying to evening appointments, remember that they are working professionals, not photo opportunities. A respectful nod is appropriate; blocking their path for photos is not. Start your stroll along Hanami-koji, the main street lined with exclusive tea houses. Then wander to Shirakawa, where willow trees line a narrow canal, and the reflections of lanterns dance on the water. This is especially magical in spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. For dinner, slip into one of the small restaurants on the side streets. Many serve excellent kaiseki (traditional multi-course meals) at reasonable prices compared to the tea houses.
