The Story

The Sumida River has been the heart of Tokyo for centuries, but most visitors stick to the temple area and miss this beautiful stretch of waterfront. Starting from Asakusa Station, you can walk along the river for several kilometers, passing under historic bridges like Komagata-bashi and Azuma-bashi. The path is popular with local joggers in the morning and strolling couples in the evening. From the riverside, you get one of the best views of Tokyo Skytree — especially beautiful at night when it's lit up in blue or purple. Pack a bento lunch or pick up some snacks from the convenience stores and find a bench to enjoy the view. In spring, the riverside paths become tunnel of cherry blossoms. The Sumida Park area transforms into a sea of pink, and locals come for hanami (flower viewing) parties on the grass. For an extended walk, continue south toward Ryogoku, the sumo district, where you can visit the Sumo Museum and watch morning practice at one of the sumo stables.
